“Groups of children can use the internet to achieve education objectives on their own.” These were the words of Dr.Sugata Mitra who is an education expert, teaching Educational Technology at the School of Education. He conducted experiments in the poorest parts of India where he first installed a computer in the wall for children. Yes in the wall. These were children who had never seen a computer before: they gathered in small groups and soon they figured out how to use the computer, download images online and record audio. As his experiments evolved, Dr. Mitra’s posed questions like “Can Tamil speaking children teach themselves Biotechnology in English?” Once again he left a computer for the children, when he came back two months later, he was baffled to hear from one girl say that “Apart from the fact that improper Replication of the DNA molecules causes genetic disease, we’ve understood nothing else.” :)

Without the help of teachers, or interpreters, these children were indeed able to learn a difficult topic despite the language barriers.

So does this mean that we no longer need teachers or that we could stop attending our lectures? Of course not, but it does highlight the importance of group work. Dr. Mitra explains that the common factor throughout his experiments were that children worked in groups and had access to one computer (to discourage breaking up of groups- and of course to provide the internet as a resource). It was through discussion that the children could tackle some of the toughest tasks given to them – something that would be impossible for the students if they work individually.

Dr. Mitra is now dedicated to installing Self Organized Learning Environments” (SOLE) – a facility of basic furniture and computers that allows children to sit in groups and access the internet; this provides an opportunity for children in poor countries to have an eduction they otherwise would lack. With a little financial help imagine the possibilities for these children in their life.

As for us, these children teach us to think twice about skipping tutorials.

Photo

How to be alone, by Tanya Davis
